Youth Chorus

Walnut Street Church of Christ Youth Chorus

For more than twenty years the youth chorus has been a part of the Walnut Street youth program. The group is patterned after the choruses of Freed-Hardeman, Harding and Lipscomb Universities. During the academic year the chorus practices an hour before the beginning of evening worship. Comprised of sixty 6th through 12th graders the group organizes in the fall and welcomes all those who wish to participate. There are no audition or try-outs necessary only a desire to learn more about singing. Each child is encouraged to realize their full potential, understanding that the purpose is not to produce professional singers, but to encourage, edify and teach young men and women about singing and its use in worship to God.

Approximately fifteen times each year the young men of the youth group conduct the services at an area congregation. The young men present all prayers, song leading, scripture reading, and the lesson. After the close of the service the youth chorus sings presenting a thirty-minute program. Typically ten to twelve songs are presented ranging from classical to traditional and spiritual.

The program has been under the direction of Bob Spencer since it inception in 1987. He is assisted by many talented individuals at Walnut Street, including: Tim Spann, Jeff White, Steve Baggett, Charles DeBerry, Lisa Cooper, Kim Long, Fara White and others.
